Wuxi police ask for help after plight of desperate family goes public

Police are calling on the public to help a 5-year-old girl who was found living in an underground parking lot with her father in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, Chinanews.com reported yesterday.

The father surnamed Wang was caught by police on Tuesday after he broke into a mini-van in the parking lot. He stole two packages of biscuits, nine packs of cigarettes and 11 yuan in cash.

Wang was desperate to get some food for his hungry daughter, who was later found in the basement covered by damp and smelly sheets, the report said.

The girl’s mother left them in July 2013. She was addicted to online games and poured boiling water on her daughter in 2009 when the girl unplugged the computer accidentally while playing, the report said. The girl has scars on her body from the incident.

Wang has no savings. He begs and collects rubbish to make a living, the report said.

By Tuesday evening, residents in Wuxi had donated 8,000 yuan (US$1,295) to the family.
