Unlicensed doctor gets 8 months in sex-selective abortion

AN unlicensed doctor was sentenced to eight months in prison for performing an illegal, sex-selective abortion for at least one pregnant woman after gender testing, Jiading District People's Court said yesterday.

The female doctor, surnamed Fang, set up an unlawful clinic in her rental apartment in Jiading District in March 2012, prosecutors said.

She profited from providing ultrasound scans for pregnant mothers who wanted to know the gender of the fetus and providing abortions when they weren’t happy with the unborn baby's gender, court officials said.

Fang offered such an abortion to a woman on July 29, 2012, and was paid 590 yuan (US$97.33), according to the court.

Police and local health authorities raided her clinic and nabbed her as she was performing an ultrasound scan on a woman on August 23, 2012.

A court official surnamed Gao told Shanghai Daily that the number of sex-selective abortions Fang performed were believed to exceed one but the other operations couldn't be confirmed due to a lack of evidence.

Under Chinese law, performing a sex-selective abortion or an operation for terminating gestation without a medical license shall be punished by imprisonment of no more than three years. If the operation seriously harms the victim's health, the prison term can be three to 10 years. Causing the patient’s death can lead to a prison term of 10 years or more.
