Two H5N6 bird flu cases reported in S China including 1 death with both related to close contact with live poultry
GUANGDONG Province reported two cases of human H5N6 bird flu. One was dead and one was in critical condition. These two cases were the world’s 5th and 6th case of human’s infection of the deadly virus, Guangdong health authority reported yesterday.
The death case was a 26-year-old woman living in Shenzhen. She was hospitalized on December 28 and died two days later. The patient’s quick death was because she didn’t visit hospital in time and went to the hospital until she was seriously sick, according to Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Investigation found the patient had a history of contact with live poultry, the same with other five cases.
Shenzhen CDC said the relevant live poultry market has been shut and all close contacts were undergoing strict monitoring without developing flu-like symptoms so far.
Another case was a 40-year-old woman living in Zhaoqing city. She was reported on January 1. A total of 64 close contacts and 5 employers at the live poultry market have been put under medical monitoring. Sixteen were released after medical observation and the rest 48 of close contacts were still undergoing inspection without developing symptoms, according to Zhaoqing Health Bureau.
The authority said the two cases were both isolated cases and there was no evidence of human to human infection. Keeping away from live poultry and birds are effective for prevention.
