Students selling their eggs

HIGH school and university students are raising money by selling their eggs to childless couples, according to a report aired by China Central Television at the weekend.
An “egg agent” told CCTV donors around 20 years old were favored, and were also required to be pretty, healthy and well-educated.
Clients can choose donors from a list of personal details that includes family background, blood type and education, according to CCTV, and agencies charge clients from 30,000 (US$4,835) to 100,000 yuan. Students are paid a percentage, CCTV said.
One 18-year-old high school student told the program she was trying to pay off her credit card debts.
CCTV said few of the students it talked to realized the health risks involved.
One agent told the program: “ How can we tell them about the hazards to get eggs? We have to lure them.”
CCTV said that donors had to have a number of injections before their eggs were removed and the process could lead to infertility.
Unlike university students, the program said, women from poor areas prefered to be surrogate mothers, earning more than 100,000 yuan, CCTV said.
China banned selling sperm and eggs and surrogate mothering in 2001, but no specific authority is designated to manage the ban.
