Rhodes names first Chinese scholars

FOUR students from the Chinese mainland have been awarded Rhodes Scholarships for China after passing their final interviews in Shanghai over the weekend. They will start their postgraduate study at Oxford University in England next October, the Rhodes Trust said yesterday.

Funded by donors from China’s mainland, Hong Kong and the University of Oxford, the scholarships were launched earlier this year.

They cover all study fees, health insurance and travel costs, and provide a personal stipend for room and board. The value of each is about 54,000 pounds (US$81,000) a year, said Charles Conn, Warden of Rhodes House.

“China has an important role to play in the 21st century, and we wish to reflect that in the global footprint of the Rhodes Scholarships,” he said.

Gong Chenzhuo, a graduate from Fudan University in Shanghai with a bachelor’s degree in international politics and working with UNESCO in Tanzania, was the only man among the four winners.

The others were: Ren Naying, an English literature student at Tsinghua University and co-founder of an organization supporting LGBT in China; Zhang Chunying, a Zhejiang University graduate who is studying for a master’s in journalism at Columbia University; and Zhang Wanyu, a law student at Peking University, who does pro bono work for factory workers who have suffered workplace injuries.

“The new Chinese Rhodes Scholars will contribute significantly through sharing their skills, knowledge and energy to the class cohort at Oxford and we look forward to welcoming them,” Conn said.

More than 900 Chinese students are currently enrolled at Oxford, making it the second-largest group of international students, after the United States, he said.

The Rhodes Scholarships are administered and awarded by the Rhodes Trust, which was established in 1902.
