Plagiarism blamed for shoddy TV

Plagiarism, unauthorized broadcasting and other copyright theft cases are frequent in China’s film and TV industry, the Copyright Society of China said yesterday.

Weak copyright protection has resulted in little incentive for screenwriters, shoddy quality of films and TV series, and copycat products, a statement from the society said following a recent seminar on the topic.

This has held back the development of the film and TV industry despite the country now being the world’s largest TV series producer and consumer, third largest film producer and second largest consumer.

Feng Gang, a judge with Beijing’s intellectual property rights court, told the seminar that lawmakers need to better define plagiarism and fair use.

Cui Guobin, a Tsinghua University professor, suggested strengthening the role of industry associations in copyright protection and establishing a blacklist for those who infringe copyright.

Chinese TV series have long been accused of too similar and containing tedious plots, leading to more and more people following foreign TV series.
