Movie family to share their lives on Weibo

CHEN Ting, the wife of film director Zhang Yimou, posted a family photograph on her Weibo account yesterday, saying she and her husband had decided to share their lives with the public via the account to protect the family from “made-up stories.”

The couple hit the headlines in January after they were found to have violated China’s family planning policy by having three children when Zhang already had a daughter with his previous wife. Zhang was fined 7.48 million yuan (US$1.2 million).

The photograph shows the couple, who got married in 2011, with their sons, aged 10 and 13, and their 8-year-old daughter.

Chen said yesterday was a special day because it was both her birthday and the anniversary of their marriage.

In a message posted along with the photograph, she wrote: “On this special occasion, I want to say something to media friends, people who know me and people who don’t know me.

“As the family of a public figure, I understand that it is a luxury for us to live a low-profile life. Although we have tried our best to protect our family and children, it’s a pity that there are always some people who want to ruin our peace.

“In that case, we have decided to share our real life with friends who care about us, and we hope people can know about us through this platform rather than listening to fake stories made up by others.”

Chen said she and Zhang would be telling their children that they would have to get used to living their lives in the glare of media attention.

Zhang is one of China’s most famous filmmakers, winning awards at festivals around the world that included Golden Lion and Silver Lion prizes at Venice, the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, and the Golden Bear at Berlin. He made his directorial debut with “Red Sorghum” in 1987 and his work includes “The Road Home,” “Hero,” “House of Flying Daggers” and “Curse of the Golden Flower.”

Zhang also directed the much acclaimed opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
