Man desperate for cash to upgrade virtual weapons stayed on for 17 hours after killing 6 in home robbery: prosecutors

THE arrest of a man suspected of killing a family of six was approved yesterday in Guangzhou City, New Express Daily reported.

The 29-year-old suspect, surnamed Su, broke into an apartment in Panyu District, Guangzhou, to commit a robbery on April 28. The report said he was armed with knives and a hammer when he broke into the 22nd floor apartment at 3 am.

The suspect was reportedly addicted to online games and wanted the money to upgrade his virtual weapons.

Su, a migrant worker, hit the family's grandfather with the hammer to knock him out so he could complete the robbery, the report said. However, the man woke up and alerted his wife, son and daughter-in-law to the intrusion, the newspaper said.

A fight broke out and Su stabbed the four adults to death, according to the report. He then entered a bedroom where two children were crying and killed them, New Express said.

He was reportedly in the house for 17 hours. Su eventually fled with more than 6,000 yuan, a gold necklace and bank cards, the report said.

On May 3, police captured Su, who has no criminal record, the report said.
