Man accused of dragging officer 20 meters to avoid traffic fine
A DRIVER was detained for assaulting the police after seriously injuring an officer who he dragged more than 20 meters in an attempt to avoid a ticket, Jiefang Daily reported today, citing Shanghai police.
Surveillance footage showed the man, driving a red Audi A5 sedan, stopped with his car partially encroaching into the intersection of Chengdu Road N. and Weihai Road on the evening of November 12 when the traffic light turned red.
The man, identified as Lin Bin, 27, stopped his car beyond the line and caused a traffic jam at the crossing, the report said.
Lin reluctantly backed up when an officer approached and asked him to do so. The officer, surnamed Huang, required Lin to show his driver’s license since he saw him making a phone call while backing the car up, the report said.
Lin argued that he just looked the phone and refused to take out his license, the report said. When the traffic light turned green, Lin, apparently fearing he would be fined, pressed on the accelerator, police said. The officer’s hand was caught on the car and he fell down and was dragged more than 20 meters, leaving him bleeding and with a fractured hand.
A police patrol car caught up with him at the following crossing.
Police said Lin told them he regretted breaking the traffic rules and hurting the officer in an attempt to escape a fine.
