ID required for bus tickets in Xinjiang
POLICE and transport authorities in west China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have ruled that people must provide proof of identity when buying bus tickets in a bid to monitor travel in the area beset by violence.
As of September 1, passengers will be required to produce any one of 25 types of ID cards when buying tickets at 119 long-distance bus stations, the authorities said.
The ID and bus information will be printed on the tickets and also be uploaded to a police database.
When tickets are checked, passengers will be asked to show their ID cards, they said.
The central government requires real-name registration for buying train tickets around the country, but rules for long-distance buses, which are widely used as a form of cheap transport, typically have been more relaxed.
