Husband, wife officials leave nurse paralyzed

HUSBAND and wife public officials have been suspended after allegedly beating a nurse with an umbrella until it broke, leaving her paralyzed.

It is claimed that the couple, from Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, had objected to a male patient being put in the same hospital ward as their daughter’s.

The father Dong Anqing is identified as publicity chief at Jiangsu Provincial Procuratorate. The Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation confirmed his wife was an official at the province’s Science and Technology Museum.  Web users identified her as deputy director Yuan Yaping.

Nanjing Stomatological Hospital said nurse Chen Xingyu was badly beaten early Tuesday and left with fluid around the heart and spinal injuries.

The local health bureau said her condition had improved yesterday evening, but she still couldn’t move her legs, Xinhua news agency reported.

A doctor, surnamed Zhu, who tried to stop the attack suffered slight injuries.

The incident began on Monday night when a man who bled severely during an operation was transferred to the hospital.

After emergency treatment, he was assigned the only bed available, in the ward where the couple’s daughter was, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

She did not object, the newspaper reported.

In the early hours of Tuesday, the daughter told her parents of the arrangement in a phone conversation.

The couple allegedly rushed to the hospital and attacked Chen with an umbrella.

A Weibo microblog user, claiming to be an intern nurse, said the umbrella broke under the force of the blows.

The intern questioned: “Just because your daughter’s sleep was disturbed, how can you beat someone else’s daughter, leaving her paralyzed?

“The nurse they attacked is such a good girl, known for warm heart and she works long hours saving people’s lives. I call for justice,” the intern added.
