Fujian governor under investigation for corruption

The governor of southeast China’s Fujian Province has been put under investigation on suspicion of “serious disciplinary violations,” the country’s anti-graft watchdog has said.

Su Shulin, 54, had been governor since 2011 and also served as deputy Communist Party chief in Fujian, the Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said in a statement late on Wednesday.

Prior to his appointment in Fujian he was chairman of China Petroleum and Chemical Corp, or Sinopec Corp. He is the latest figure in the oil sector to be investigated.

The commission did not give details about Su’s suspected “disciplinary violations,” but the accusation is regularly used as a euphemism for corruption.

Sinopec’s parent company CNPC was a power base for China’s former domestic security chief Zhou Yongkang, the highest level official to fall so far in the country’s sweeping campaign against corruption, waste and extravagance in official ranks.

Zhou was a central figure in what analysts termed the “oil faction” of influential politicians who have ties with China’s powerful and lucrative petroleum industry.

He was jailed for life in June, and dozens of others in the sector have been placed under investigation.

Ex-Sinopec President Wang Tianpu, who was put under investigation in April, was found to have taken bribes, offered benefits in exchange for his own promotion, and embezzled public assets, the Party said.

President Xi Jinping has pursued the anti-graft drive since taking office, vowing to go after both senior “tigers” and low-level “flies.”

Su began his career in the Daqing oil field in northeast China.

In August, he wrote a piece for the People’s Daily, the Communist Party’s mouthpiece, condemning corruption, comparing Zhou and other officials to a “rotten family.”
