Ex-police captain in Sichuan kept bundles of new bills valued at 11m yuan from bribes
THE home and office of an ex-police captain were stuffed with bundles of new, sequentially numbered 100-yuan bills adding up to 11 million yuan (US$1.795 million) in the southwestern province of Sichuan — but that was only a third of the bribes he took, The Beijing News reported.
Li Rongbiao, former vice captain of the provincial public security team, admitted to taking 31 million yuan in bribes after investigators seized the bundles of bills, provincial police officials said.
Police did not say whether they have determined where the rest of the money is.
Shi Jun, the provincial police chief, said Li abused his power to accept bribes from companies producing explosives.
“He committed crimes in the fields that he was assigned to supervise and the sum of bribes was huge. It was very serious,” a department-level official said.
Prosecutors have formally arrested Li, the provincial publicity department said Tuesday, though the exact charges weren’t disclosed.
