Deputy mayor axed as official dies

A VICE mayor in southeast China’s Fujian Province was removed from his post for having a banquet during which a government official died after drinking excessive alcohol, the Party’s disciplinary watchdog announced yesterday.

Chen Ruixi, vice mayor of Sanming City and Party chief of Shaxian County, attended the banquet with a businessman at a local private company canteen after discussions about an investment project on September 9, 2013.

Several other government officials, including Acting County Director Lin Zhaonao and Deputy County Director Lu Yongqing, also joined them.

After the feast, one official died, said the Central Commission for Discipline Investigation of the Party.

As punishment for being a “bad social influence”, Chen was removed from his post. Lin and Lu were also punished but no details were available.

In another incident on August 13, 2013, Lei Yansheng, chief of the Shaxian branch of China Construction Bank, and his deputy Chen Zhiyu invited clients for a meal and recreation activities in downtown Sanming. It cost them a total of 8,160 yuan (US$1,348.85), an investigation found.

After the entertainment, one of the bank officials who accompanied them died. He was also found to have imbibed alcohol. Lei was fired and Chen received punishment from the Party, officials said.

Sudden deaths triggered by excessive drinking have not been rare in recent years.

On July 23, 2013, Fu Xiaoguang, a provincial-level official in the northeastern Heilongjiang, and his relatives traveled to a local scenic spot for sightseeing. During their trip, Meng Qing’an, director of the local forestry bureau in Dongjingcheng, died of a heart attack after drinking alcohol with Fu.

Fu was then demoted to department level as punishment.

The nation has launched a thorough frugality campaign since December 2012, when the country’s new leadership issued a document to eliminate corruption and extravagance.

As part of the drive, government officials have been banned from either holding or accepting banquets and any other entertainment invitations.
