Death sentence for school attack knifeman

AN obsessed doomsday believer who injured 23 children and one adult in a knife attack in central China's Henan Province late last year was sentenced to death for attempted homicide, a court ruled today.

Min Yongjun, a 36-year-old native in Guangshan County, slashed the faces of 23 students and an adult outside the Wanquan Primary School in Chenpeng Village on December 14, 2012, the Xinyang City Intermediate People's Court heard.

The suspect was nabbed on the same day for disturbing public safety, and prosecutors approved his arrest on December 16.

Min reportedly has a history of mental disorders and was reported to have been experiencing a seizure during the attacks.

He believed the ancient Mayan prophecy that the world will end on December 21, 2012, according to police.
