Critically sick H5N6 patient, 40, delivers healthy baby through C-section

A 40-year-old woman infected with H5N6 bird flu has given birth to a healthy baby through caesarean while she was still in critical condition, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The woman surnamed He was hospitalized on December 28 for coughing and fever, which had lasted for 6 days.

He, with 35 weeks of pregnancy, received the surgery to deliver the baby on the next day of hospitalization and later checks confirmed the baby hasn’t been infected with the virus, said officials from Zhaoqing No.1 People’s Hospital in Guangdong Province.

The patient was still in serious condition and her condition would be more complicated since she needed to recover from the caesarean surgery while having lung infection and other organ problems.

Guangdong Province has become a major place with reports of human infection of H5N6 in the nation.

So far, it has reported four cases, which all have a history of live poultry exposure. Except for the first case reported in December, 2014, all the rest were reported within recent two weeks.

The latest case was reported last Thursday, when a 25-year-old man surnamed Cai from Longgang District in Guangdong’s Shenzhen City was announced in serious condition and treated in a Shenzhen hospital for H5N6 infection.

A 26-year-old woman, who died on December 28, was reported H5N6 infection on December 29 and the 40-year-old pregnant woman was reported on January 1.

The world's first human H5N6 infection was reported in May 2014 in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Guangdong Province Center for Disease Control and Prevention said all the reported cases were sporadic ones and H5N6 virus was still in local spread risk, however preventing contacts with live poultry is key task.  Experts from China Center for Disease Control and Prevention has urged Guangdong to completely shut all the live poultry market for bird flu control.

Jiangxi Province health authority reported the detection of H5N6 case through routine monitoring to patients with fly and serious pneumonia over the weekend.

The 42-year-old man was living in Guangdong for a long time and was involving in vegetable sales with a history of live poultry exposure. He was taken to the hometown by family members after falling sick and died on December 21 at a hospital in Ganzhou of Jiangxi Province. None of the man's close contacts have developed flu-like symptoms.
