China’s gymnastics champions’ cradle embroiled in sex assault scandal
CLOSED-DOOR training was questioned for offering trainers chances to molest young athletes, after a gymnastics school in central China’s Hunan Province was embroiled in a sex assault scandal.
The school in the provincial capital of Changsha has produced 15 world champions and six Olympic winners, including Liu Xuan and Li Xiaopeng.
But insiders said their former principal Liu Zhiqiang and his deputy Zeng Rong were held in police custody as early as last November for allegedly molesting at least six girls.
The scandal did not fall into media spotlight until a report today in The Oriental Morning Post. “Gymnastics is a local forte and authorities asked to keep it as a top secret,” an anonymous insider said.
Local police declined to reveal any details, except that the case involved underage children.
Lawyer Du Xiaoqiu said closed-door training has management loopholes. Victims often feel helpless and it is difficult to collect evidence.
