Bus arsonist ‘wants jail for free meals’
A SUSPECT in an arson incident yesterday on a bus in Changsha, capital of central China’s Hunan Province, is said to have told police he wanted to be jailed to get free meals.
This was the second case of bus arson in China in a week.
A blaze on a vehicle in Hangzhou, capital of east China’s Zhejiang Province, last Saturday left 32 people injured.
Yesterday’s fire was started about 5:30am.
After seeing that the mid section of his bus was on fire, driver Chang Jianwei quickly pulled over, evacuated passengers and put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.
The suspect, surnamed Chen, was held by police at the scene and has been placed in custody.
The 30-year-old from south China’s Guangxi Autonomous Region said he took a train to Changsha on Thursday to find a job, but without success.
As he had little cash, Chen decided to “trigger some trouble to get meals in prison,” according to police.
He poured flammable liquid from a drinks bottle in the bus and set it alight, he told police.
Local traffic authorities said there were between 30 and 40 passengers on the bus. Two passengers suffered slight injuries escaping, but no one was burned.
Officials praised Chang’s calmness and bravery, saying his actions had prevented casualties.
Changh has been awarded 10,000 yuan (US$1,600) by the Changsha Transport Bureau, according to Hunan Daily.
