Beijing police heighten security amid warnings by western embassies

BEIJING police on Thursday announced “yellow security alarm” and will guard medium to large sized shopping malls and supermarkets during Christmas and New Year.

Police said they will step up precautionary measures at those venues as well as those where sales campaigns are planned by ensuring that each venue has at least one policeman.

In Dongcheng District, police said they will beef up forces around churches to deter criminals and increase surveillance in commercial hubs such as Wangfujing and Nanluoguxiang to prevent stampedes.

The yellow alarm is above the green alarm which means basic daily measures, while less intense than orange and red alarms, Legal Evening News reported.

During the National Day holiday in China this year, Beijing police also announced “yellow alarm” at shopping malls and supermarkets.

Embassies of the United States and the UK in China said on their official websites that they have “received information of possible threats against Westerners in the Sanlitun area of Beijing, on or around Christmas Day” and urged their citizens to “exercise heightened vigilance”.
