9 injured as man drives SUV into crowd

A MAN was detained yesterday in Kunming, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, after allegedly driving a vehicle into a crowd, injuring nine people.

The 30-year-old, surnamed Liu, drove a sports utility vehicle into the crowd about 10am near Jindian Park, a city police officer said.

Two of the people injured are in serious condition.

Liu was detained at the scene after bus drivers and members of the public worked together to stop his vehicle.

According to the results of an initial investigation, Liu has a record of mental illness.

He allegedly told police that he carried out the attack as revenge on society after a long period of failed treatments for his illness. An investigation is under way.
