44 taken off jet as landing gear fails
THE nose of a passenger jet carrying 44 people hit the runway of Xinzheng International Airport in Zhengzhou, capital of central Henan Province, yesterday evening.
The aircraft was taxiing after landing when its landing gear failed, said officials.
All 37 passengers and seven crew on board the domestically produced Xinzhou-60 were safe, authorities said.
The flight, operated by Joyair, had flown in from Taiyuan, capital of northern Shanxi Province when the accident occurred at around 6.30pm. It was due to fly on to Hefei in eastern Anhui Province.
Everyone onboard were evacuated after the accident.
The airport was closed afterwards and operations resumed at around 10:30pm. A total of 114 inbound and outbound flights were delayed.
The front landing gear withdrew accidently causing the nose of the plane to touch the ground, said an official with the Civil Aviation Administration of China, central and south China bureau.
An investigation has been launched.
