3rd fugitive captured at family gathering

THE last of three fugitives who escaped from a detention center in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province last week after killing a guard was captured yesterday.
The Ministry of Public Security said Gao Yulun, 50, was seized at his niece’s house in Yanshou County’s Hefu Village around 5pm.
The Legal Evening News reported that Gao had gone to the house, where a family banquet was underway, shortly after 4pm and had calmly sat down to eat. His niece’s father-in-law called the police, but Gao stayed where he was. Less than 10 minutes later, police arrived.
Some villagers set off firecrackers after he was taken away, the newspaper reported.
A report on Chinese news portal www.sina.com gave a different version.
It said Gao had gone to his niece’s house around 5pm, asking for food, citing Tang Daming, the niece’s husband.
Gao’s niece agreed to cook dinner for him but her father-in-law and brother-in-law tied him up with plastic ropes. Gao had kicked Tang’s father, accusing him of betrayal, Tang said.
Gao’s niece had often looked after him, including washing his clothes, after his wife died.
Heilongjiang authorities had offered a reward of 100,000 yuan (US$16,250) per man for information leading to the trio’s capture after the September 2 breakout, and had raised it to 150,000 yuan.
Li Haiwei, 29, and Wang Damin, 35, were captured by police on September 3 and 4.
Before his capture, Gao had broken into a store in Hefu Village, drinking bottles of beverage and half a bottle of beer before making off with mooncakes, biscuits, more than 10 bottles of liquor, cigarettes, a quilt and a cotton-padded jacket, leaving 120 yuan behind, The Beijing News reported.
Gao looked thin and was near collapse after his days on the run, according to China Central Television, citing villagers who saw his capture. The police hunt, including the use of a helicopter where officers were shouting down to likely hiding places, had reduced him to poor mental state, CCTV said.
Gao had been awaiting review of a death penalty for murder.
