3 men acquitted after 19 years in prison

THREE men who were imprisoned 19 years ago for the kidnap and murder of a teenage boy were yesterday acquitted by a high court in southeast China’s Fujian Province.

Two of them, Chen Xiaying and Huang Xing, left their cells to be reunited with their families. The third, Lin Lifeng, died in prison in 2008, and was pardoned posthumously.

The three men were detained in 1996 on suspicion of kidnapping and killing a 13-year-old boy and demanding a ransom of 70,000 yuan (US$11,300). The child had gone missing in April and his body was found near a local primary school weeks later.

Though there was only circumstantial evidence linking the men to the crime, Huang, 21, Lin, 19 and Chen, 17, were known to police and were taken into custody in June.

The following November they were tried and found guilty at the intermediate people’s court in Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian. Huang and Lin were given the death penalty suspended for two years, while Chen was sentenced to life imprisonment.

In the years that followed, the men made three appeals against their sentences, but each of them failed.

In February of this year, the case was again reopened and a hearing was held on May 11.

The process resulted in yesterday’s acquittals.
