3 dead, 23 missing after ships sink off E China

A third body has been salvaged after two ships sank in separate accidents off the coast of east China's Shandong Province, local authorities said today.

The three bodies were found after a cargo ship "XINGLONGZHOU65," registered in east China's Zhejiang Province, sank off Yantai City around 9pm yesterday, the Shandong Maritime Safety Administration said. Nine others onboard the ship remained missing.

Twelve sailors were onboard when the ship started leaning in strong gales after it lost power at about 8:50pm, said the administration.

The 88-meter-long ship, which was loaded with stone, lost touch with maritime authorities six minutes after it made an emergency call.

In another accident, a cargo ship "ZIHAISHUN," registered in north China's Tianjin Municipality, sank off Weihai City around 2:30am today, leaving 14 sailors missing.

As of 3 p.m., no sailor had been found.

Rescuers on boats and in helicopters are searching for the missing people, the administration said.

Strong winds and waves are to blame for both accidents, it said.
