2 dead, 7 missing as rains, floods hit southwest China

HEAVY rains since Friday in southwest China have left two people dead and at least seven missing, local authorities said yesterday.

In Sichuan Province, almost 7,000 people had been evacuated as of yesterday afternoon after 2,000 homes in six cities crumbled under massive downpours, the provincial flood control headquarters said in a press release.

At least 10 towns in the cities of Dazhou and Guang’an were inundated by rain-triggered floods — in some places the precipitation exceeded 200 millimeters — while two landslides were also reported, it said. At least two people were killed in the devastation, officials said, though no details were provided.

In neighboring Chongqing, at least six people were missing as of 5pm yesterday after their homes were demolished by a landslide caused by heavy rains between 8am and 1pm.

Rescuers are continuing to search for the missing persons, whose identities are unknown, the Changshou district government said in a press release.

In the Gelan township, six people got into difficulty when the minivan they were in was swept off the road by a torrent of water. Five managed to escape to safety, but one is still missing, officials said.

The Chongqing weather bureau said the heavy rain is likely to last until tomorrow, while the National Meteorological Center yesterday maintained its “blue” rain alert for western regions. China has a color-coded warning system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

As well as the rain forecast for Sichuan and Chongqing, areas of Hubei and Guangdong Provinces, and the Guangxi Zhuang and Inner Mongolia autonomous regions will also see downpours.
