Forensic search of Sydney siege underway

Forensic officers of the Sydney police force began investigating on Wednesday the scene of the city siege which left three people dead.

The officers entered the CBD's Lindt cafe, the scene of the three deaths, to gather evidence to piece together exactly how two hostages and the self-proclaimed Muslim cleric and gunman Man Haron Manis died. Six other people were injured.

The work of the forensic officers is crucial to establishing what happened in the final moments of the horrifying 16-hour siege.

The drama involving 17 hostages put a city, and a nation, on hold before police stormed the cafe at 2:13 am on Tuesday.

Acclaimed barrister Katrina Dawson and the Martin Place cafe manager Tori Johnson died in the final showdown, as did Manis, shot dead by police.

The forensic team are now at work to define exactly what happened.

As they combed for evidence, a massive floral tribute outside the cafe created by members of the public grew.
