Cannes film queen feels as if she’s 21

NICOLE Kidman says she still tackles roles like a 21-year-old after the premiere of her shocking new horror movie at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Hollywood A-lister is the queen of Cannes this year with four different projects at the world’s top cinema showcase, including “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” where she plays a suburban mum who has to sacrifice one of her children.

“I don’t have to work but I do because it is still my passion, the way in which I express myself,” the 49-year-old Oscar winner said. “At this stage of my life I’m just trying to stay very bold and open and try things and support filmmakers that I believe in ... I’m at that place in my life where I still try to act as though I’m 21 and starting my career.”

Kidman and Irish actor Colin Farrell play a couple of married doctors in “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.

Despite the bone-chilling story being inspired by the ancient Greek myth of Iphigenia, it also drew big laughs thanks to its pitch-black humor. A few queasy critics walked out of the screening when it got a bit gory and there were even a few boos. But the film still earned good reviews from the critics.

“I have a certain moral compass which I abide by in terms of what I feel I will and won’t do as a human being. But when I choose a director to work with, obviously that’s a risk and I’m totally up for taking risks,” the actress said.

Kidman, also stars as a punk matriarch in the sci-fi “How to Talk to Girls at Parties,” and plays a governess of a US Civil War-era girls school in Sofia Coppola’s remake of “The Beguiled,” as well as returning to star in her friend Jane Campion’s second season of “Top of the Lake.”

Kidman admits she enjoys her television roles but says she has no plans to swap the big screen for the small one just yet.

“I’m a huge fan of cinema and being in a dark room watching a film and being transported. I love that and I will always love that,” Kidman said.

The Cannes film festival runs until Sunday.
