A video called “Say My Name” made by Chinese students at Columbia University telling of the cultural implications of their Chinese names has gone viral online.

They answered questions like “What does your name mean?” and “Why is your name so important to you?” in the video, as an attempt to respond to the recent incidents of Chinese nametags being ripped off from the dormitory doors.

It all happened during the Chinese New Year holiday. However, the nametags in English remained intact.

Chinese students condemned such deed on their Facebook pages.

Columbia University’s Asian American Alliance soon released a statement on their official Facebook account to condemn the incidents as “a racist and unacceptable attempt.” They said the statement represents their “rejection of acts of bigotry and intimidation both on this campus and in the larger world today.” Seven student organizations including Global China Connection have signed on the statement.

Office of Multicultural Affairs at Columbia University first responded to the incidents and promised to further investigate the case.

“Our names bear special meanings and mean a lot to us, so please respect our names,” Hai Ge, one of the Chinese students, said. “To introduce how beautiful our Chinese names are might be one of the best ways to let people respect our names.”
