A visually impaired and partially deaf 55-year-old school janitor has become an overnight sensation after wowing the nation on a television talent show with a pastiche of Michael Jackson dance moves.

The audience and judges where left open-mouthed after the middle-aged man embarked on a stunning set of moves the late singing legend would have been proud of. The achievement is all the more remarkable when you consider the performer is almost blind in his left eye, after a retinal detachment when he was at a younger age, and partially deaf. The dancer also needs a hearing aid to listen to music.

Wang Shijin, works as a cleaner at a college in Shenyang, capital of north China’s Liaoning Province, during the day. But at night, and after work, Wang comes alive to the sound of music thanks to his children.

His kids introduced Wang to Jackson several years ago and ever since then he has practiced until it was perfect.

In the beginning, the dancing wannabe practiced in the toilets at work during breaks for fear of being laughed at by students. But later Wang shared his experience with the school’s students and teachers at a dancing class at the college where he works.

The planning for his TV appearance was so meticulous that he drew L S Lowryesque matchstick sketches to break up and divide the musical piece he was going to perform into segments.

And Wang’s planning worked to perfection as he stunned a nation of TV viewers and netizens, who later took to social media to say they were moved to tears by his performance.

Wang has since mastered the art of modern dance and folk dance and the college has even issued him with a special bachelor's certificate on modern dance.
