What can you buy with 0.5 yuan (7 US cents) nowadays? Almost nothing.

At one breakfast stall in Zhejiang Province though, such a pittance can still get you a cup of soybean milk, an egg pancake or a sticky rice cake.

The stall in question is operated by 83-year-old Mao Shihua, CCTV reported recently. Mao, known locally as “breakfast granny,” has been plying her trade for the past 24 years in Huangtankou Township, in Quzhou City.

Even more remarkably, she’s also never raised her prices.

Mao gets up at 2am every day to prepare for the breakfast rush. By 5:30am, she begins waiting for customers outside a local primary school.

Mao insists on using the best ingredients and making food all by herself.

Working from morning into the night, Mao’s labors bring her only about 1,000 yuan every month. In fact, her business is often in the red thanks to rising ingredient costs.

Mao’s daughter has frequently urged her to abandon the lose-making enterprises, but to no avail. But when her mother’s earnings and pension income can’t cover costs, she’s also willing to offer financial support.

According to Mao, what keeps her in business isn’t money, but the students she serves. Mao said she loves hearing these pupils reading their books and greeting her in the morning. She vowed to continue serving these youngsters as long as her health allows.
