Polaris: A hub for high-tech innovation

WITH its sprawling villas, luxurious yachts and spectacular marinas, Sardinia is known to the world as a meeting place for the international jet set. Despite its reputation as a playground for the rich and fabulously famous, Sardinia is also one of Europe's leading locations for research, technological development and innovation.
Nearly 20 years ago in 1991, Italian Nobel Laureate Carlo Rubbia founded CRS4 - the Centre for Advanced Studies, Research and Development - in Sardinia, and with it, established Italy's first website. Ever since, the region has stayed on the cutting-edge of technology through fostering the development of innovative, knowledge-intensive sectors and multidisciplinary scientific environments.
Sardegna DistrICT and Sardegna BioValley are both examples of local networks of universities, public and private research centers and enterprises that have been generated by these efforts - the former focused on ICT, and the latter on biomedicine.
The region's standout player in the technology field, however, is Polaris. Jointly established in 2003 by the Autonomous Regional Government of Sardinia and the European Union, this regional Science and Technology Park runs projects across information and communication technologies, biotechnologies (biomedicine and applied biotechnologies) and renewable energies.
Today, the park is home to 70 enterprises and research centers, and this year it is ranked No. 1 among Italian technology parks for the number of biotech tenants; overall, Sardinia is the fifth leading location in Italy for biotech enterprises.
This Friday, Polaris will introduce its dynamic blend of top-notch facilities, optimum conditions, R&D and industrial application capabilities at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai. It will explain to spectators the park's system of services, platforms and tools for technological innovation and R&D.
Thanks to the availability of substantial financial resources (700 million euros/US$890 million) and to a secure legal framework, the park offers excellent collaboration opportunities for Chinese firms.
Therefore, representatives from Polaris will be meeting with select Chinese organizations active in the biology, pharmacy and medicine sectors, as well as governmental intelligence and ICT officers, to establish a foundation for future R&D-based cooperation agreements.
