Feel the carnival rhythm of the night

FROM yesterday to Sunday, the Italy Pavilion is welcoming Sardinia as the 8th region to take part in its rotating regional showcase.

Following the exhibition's opening yesterday, tonight, Sardinia will invite Chinese guests to experience its best traditions: food, wine and folklore, kicking off a spectacular journey through the region that will last all night.

Guests' taste buds will be tantalized by typical Sardinian dishes such as Porceddu (roast suckling pig) or Mallureddus alla campidanese (handmade Sardinian gnocchetti), while their ears and eyes will be delighted with a traditional folk music performance.

Folk will set the rhythm of the night, as the sights and sounds first of "Mamuthones and Issohadores," and then the folk group "Villanova" from Cagliari city, infuse the pavilion with wonder.

Mamuthones and Issohadores are typical Sardinian masks worn during the Mamuthones festival that traditionally takes place in the small Sardinian town of Mamoiada. The Mamuthones trudge along slowly, bent under the weight of their cowbells, while the Issohadores take light, agile steps; together creating an otherworldly tempo.

While the origin of the Mamuthones festival dates back to ancient times, its true meaning has been lost over the ages. It remains surrounded in a shroud of fascination and mystery, and is thought by many to celebrate the victory of Sardinian shepherds (Issohadores) against the Saracen invaders, imprisoned and led in procession (Mamuthones).

After dinner, guests will be invited to attend a fashion show in the Italy Pavilion's glamorous "Joy of Living" square - truly the best place to showcase the Italian way of life. Down the catwalk will strut beautiful dresses made of top quality silks, laces and fabrics, which have been designed by two ateliers - Gaja and Zigno - to show the beauty and generous nature of the island of Sardinia.

Speaking to the increasing popularity of Sardinia among Chinese holidaymakers, tomorrow, the Italy Pavilion will host "Rose Wedding," where Chinese married couples who honeymooned in Sardinia will share stories and dance at a romantic Sardinian ball to relive their wonderful experiences all over again. One couple will also have the honor of reaffirming their vows in the presence of Beniamino Quintieri, the commissioner general of Italy for World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

Last but not least, on Saturday, a special guided tasting of selected Sardinian wines will be held, to share the rich, sun-drenched flavor of the region's grapes with Chinese guests.

During the week of events dedicated to Sardinia, Chinese visitors will have a unique opportunity to experience and feel the beauty, wildness and romance of this intriguing island.
