Tanzanian kids open our eyes

During the Chinese New Year holidays, seven of us from British International School Shanghai, Puxi campus, traveled to Tanzania in Africa. We went with 99 other students from 18 Nord Anglia Education schools (our global family of schools) from 11 countries around the world. We had one goal in mind: to help.
We were there to help teach and renovate at the Maua English Medium School, as well as learn about the culture and history of the country through workshops and excursions. We’d all spent months preparing for this trip, raising funds and awareness among our school community. We were excited to finally be on our way.
None of us knew what to expect, but when we were greeted by bright smiling faces, all of our nerves about teaching and being accepted flew out the window. What really struck all of us was the appreciation the children have for the little they own rather than constantly wanting more. Nothing was more humbling than the joy the children radiated when we played with them.
This moment of clarity came for us when a little girl had done some great work and was offered a sticker as a prize. Determined to make the right choice, we could see her weighing up the pros and cons, this one had a bear, but this one had a goose. We did what anyone would have done and told her she could have both. She was so happy. That moment will stick with us for the rest of our lives.
When we painted the classrooms it was evident on the children’s faces that we had suddenly made school exciting again. Without an education the children are unable to fulfil their dreams, and so with something as simple as a lick of paint and some bright colors the children were happy and more importantly motivated. The whole trip inspired all of us to make a difference.
None of us came prepared, and none of us will ever be the same.
