Once in a lifetime experience with Rafael Nadal

FOR the second year running, SUIS Pudong Secondary students have visited the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament. It was another great trip and we were lucky enough to see David Ferrer, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in action in one day. We were lucky with a beautiful sun shining and this meant we could relax and see even more action. In the evening, we even got to see a lunar eclipse above the stadium, which made the day even more special.
The behavior and support of students were excellent throughout. At times the Shanghai crowd was more interested with our supporters’ enthusiasm than the tennis.
As part of the day, 15 lucky pupils got the chance to meet Rafael Nadal for a photograph and signature. I was so happy to meet my hero after I got picked for answering a question about a match with David Ferrer correctly.
Meeting Nadal was an experience I will never forget, even though everything happened so quickly. I can’t remember too much just before I met him, I was so excited that I almost couldn’t breathe. His security guard asked us to settle down a little as we were jumping and screaming so much before Nadal appeared. We settled down a little as I definitely didn’t want to get kicked out of the players’ area and miss this opportunity.
I think I asked our teachers around 100 times if Nadal was coming yet even though I could see he wasn’t. Eventually he appeared, signed a few autographs for other fans along the way but we could tell he was aiming straight for us. When he arrived in front of me I was so happy and emotional, he signed his autograph for me and posed for my friend to take a picture. I spoke to him in Spanish, which he liked too, I hope. After that, it was all a blur really, I couldn’t see through all of my tears and I couldn’t concentrate too well for a while but I was so happy I had met my hero. I will never forget it.
