IBSS accredited by top business school body

IN March, the International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University became the youngest institution of its kind ever to earn accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Less than 5 percent of the world’s business schools have earned this distinction, which brings the IBSS into alignment with 15 global accreditation standards.

Founded in 1916, AACSB International is the longest serving global accrediting body for business schools that offer undergraduate, masters, and doctorate degrees in business and accounting.

Achieving accreditation was a process of rigorous internal review, engagement with an AACSB assigned mentor, and peer review. During the multi-year process, IBSS focused on developing and implementing a plan to meet AACSB’s standards. These standards require excellence in areas relating to strategic management and innovation, active student and staff participation in learning and teaching, and academic and professional engagement.

“AACSB accreditation represents the highest achievement for an educational institution that awards business degrees. Everyone at XJTLU and IBSS is to be commended for their contributions in earning accreditation and for their commitment to ongoing improvement,” said Robert Reid, AACSB executive vice president and chief accreditation officer of AACSB International.

What accreditation means for those considering studying at the school’s exciting and innovative Master of Business Administration (China) program is that they can be assured that the quality of the education they receive at IBSS rivals that of the best institutions in the world.

Professor Jean Chen, dean of IBSS at XJTLU, said: “Attainment of AACSB accreditation has placed IBSS among the ... elite business schools in the world. It demonstrates that our achievement has been recognized by the world-wide business school community.”

For associate professor Julia Milner, program director of the MBA (China), accreditation is further proof that IBSS offers a curriculum that is developed to international standards and meets the needs of students looking to gain a global perspective by studying at a recognized business school.

And in addition to its rich international content, the MBA (China) program offers value-added, China-specific content that prepares students for the global employment market.

“The MBA (China) is designed with one key goal in mind: to prepare you for success in today’s dynamic global business environment. Our real-world curriculum is taught entirely in English by a diverse and expert academic business staff from 28 countries. Our aim is to ensure that our students are strong candidates in the global job market,” she said.

The 15-month, full-time program, delivered at XJTLU’s Suzhou campus in close cooperation with the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, immerses students in the business practices and cultural intricacies of both China and the Western world.

This global focus is further enhanced with exchange opportunities with top business schools around the world as well as the inclusion of a six-week study period in the heart of London’s financial markets.

Andrew De Nunzio, an MBA (China) student from the United States, travelled to London and called the experience “thoroughly enjoyable and enriching.”

“Not only have we strengthened our financial acumen in the classroom setting, but we have also seen and discussed the principles in practice on various company visits throughout the city,” he said.

James Thornton, a student from the UK, said the international experience lent a sense of reality to the MBA program, giving students an idea of what they’re working toward by spending time in world business center.

This connection with the real world of business is an important feature of the MBA (China) and, in order to enhance this, students have access to an executive mentoring program through which they are paired with business professionals who can support them throughout their study and help them with their future career goals.

“Our MBA students come from a range of international backgrounds, have various work experiences and they now are all studying full-time and living in China,” explained Dr Milner.

“It is important for us to assist them to make the most out of their studies and we spend a lot of time finding the perfect mentor for each of our MBA students. It is crucial for them to keep thinking about the next career step.”
