Journey to a lonely place

"MONODRAMA? a solo exhibition by Chinese artist Zhao Nengzhi, is running at the Hakgojae Gallery in Shanghai’s  M50 Art Zone on Moganshan Road until May 10. Featuring ethereal images and complex monologues, the works consider inner experiences and inner changes, portraying feelings of helplessness and loneliness.

This is the first solo outing for Zhao's "Infant" series, created in 2012. Although the style of images in later works in this series are different from earlier ones, the meaning conveyed remain unchanged.

In the "Infant" series the artist appears to express feelings of haunting melancholy, loneliness and metal suffering through psychological change.

The exhibition also features numerous recent works from the artist's "2014" series. These are characterized by figures with clear outlines but vague facial expressions. The use of gray tones add to the somber atmosphere, seeming to reflect the subject's feelings.

Seemingly under great external pressure, the main character "I" in "2014" can't find a place to stay or shelter, reduced to standing on a chair or crouching in a corner; existing in a unknown "somewhere," bereft of enthusiasm and passion.

Zhao has also created many sculptures and carvings related to the themes of his paintings. Wood carvings exhibited at the show cover the period from 2012 to 2014.

The artist selects ebony as the raw  material, its natural texture and cracks chiming with the presentation and tone of his paintings.
