Cartier watch display to celebrate 50 years of Chinese-French ties

TO celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, a time-traveling exhibition will be held at the Shanghai Power Station of Art starting next month. The theme of this Cartier Time Art exhibition is “time recording” and “watchmaking.” More than 180 prestigious, historical and contemporary Cartier timepieces will be displayed.

Curator Tokujin Yoshioka (pictured below), an award-winning Japanese artist and designer, worked with Cartier in 2009 for the special exhibition “Story of... Memories of Cartier Creations.” This time the artist turned his focus to Cartier’s iconic timepieces, from their origins to the present day.

The exhibition will not only showcase the masterpieces from Cartier’s collection, but will also demonstrate the watchmaking craftsmanship and the brand’s innovation technology. It will feature 3D films and live presentations by watchmakers and artisans.

“When we look into the universe, we are looking at its past. This is the world we perceive as allowed by time. What do we see then, when we are looking at a timepiece? The Cartier Time Art exhibition will help to reveal the mystery,” said Gong Yan, director of the Shanghai Power Station of Art.

The Cartier Time Art exhibition first took place in 2011 at the birthplace of watchmaking, Switzerland — at Museum Bellerive in Zurich. It then traveled to the ArtScience Museum in Singapore. The exhibition this year in Shanghai will be open to the public at Shanghai Power Station of Art from July 19 to October 12.
