Brazilian designers court China

BRAZILIAN fashion is most known for its footwear and beachwear, with tropical colors and a playful spirit reflected in the designs that bring ease into everyday life.

In mid November, the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brazil) joined several fashion associations from Brazil in bringing 20 of the country’s most distinguished fashion brands to Shanghai.

From casual wear to couture, the designers and brand representatives visited retail outlets in Shanghai. Twelve brands presented a fashion show at the House of Roosevelt on November 19. The goal was to show the world that Brazil fashion goes beyond the beach.

T. Arrigoni

“I always have a little bit of vintage, but also modern,” Tatiana Arrigoni, founder of T. Arrigoni, said.

“The color and statement pieces are Brazil. I like to create on top of a creation and on top of a creation, so for a ring you could really see the details and colors.”

The atelier has a penchant for bold designs to create statement jewelry with each piece having its own personality. Arrigoni especially likes working with natural stones as well as crystal from Swarovski.

Marcelo Quardros

“I prefer to work with images and everything I see. I’m like a sponge, I absorb everything, and then I can filter and have my inspirations,” said Marcelo Quardros, founder and designer of Marcelo Quardros.

Quadros has been a fashion designer for more than two decades. He founded this personal brand of haute couture in 1999.

Quadros dyes everything himself, from the fabric to the beads, to achieve the colors he wants. The brand now sells in 65 stores in Brazil and six overseas.

Helen Rödel

“We have very contemporary work in terms of design and we do things that machines can’t. There is no machine to do the crochet. Each one is made by hand, we basically apply contemporary design, yet seek to keep it handmade,” according to Guilherme Thofehrn, co-founder and executive director of the brand.

Helen Rödel, the designer of the brand, takes inspiration from knitting and crocheting to make contemporary fashions, creating garments with cutting-edge designs.

Many of the pieces are perfect for the summer and beach. Take a closer look to see the intricacy and detail. The clothes are also colorful, playful and with a sense of humor.

Lili Sampedro

“We travel a lot and it helps inspire me. We really focus on our prints, our prints are what we are best at,” Catherina Sampedro, creative director of the brand, said.

Lili Sampedro and her daughter Catherina create comfortable and stylish swimwear that aims to make women feel valued. Lili started the brand in 2011 but her daughter Catherina has been the creative director since last year and her sister Alexandra is an artist who creates special patterns for the designs.

The brand’s swimwear is unique in its own way as every season Catherina selects a country as a theme.

Wasabi

“It’s a kind of clean tropical way of life,” Daniela Sabbag, designer of Wasabi said.

One of the premier fashion labels in Brazil, Wasabi takes a casual approach to urban life and works with one artist on each collection. Sabbag said that designs have a Japanese influence and are not the usual Brazil people imagine with lots of parrots and beach prints.

The brand targets career women.

“Busy women don’t have to think a lot when picking our clothes because we already did the thinking for them.”
