Rita Dove first American to win Chinese poetry award

AMERICAN poet Rita Dove was awarded China’s 10th Poetry & People International Prize on September 26 during a ceremony in Guangdong Province. She is the first English-language poet to win this award.

The prize is awarded by leading poetry magazine Poetry & People, founded by noted Chinese poet Huang Lihai.

Dove is the author of numerous celebrated collections of verse. For her volume “Thomas and Beulah,” Dove received a Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1987. Dove also served as US Poet Laureate from 1993 to 1995 and was Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia from 2004 to 2006. She is the Commonwealth Professor of English at University of Virginia.

In another career highlight, Dove collaborated with composer John Williams for a live poetry reading during the US White House’s 1999-2000 New Year’s celebration.

Previous recipients of Poetry & People awards include four Chinese and five foreign writers. Among this latter group are Eugenio de Andrade of Portugal, Inna Lisnyanskaya from Russia, Tomas Tranströmer from Sweden, Tomaz Salamun from Solvenia, and Adam Zagajewski from Poland.
