Philippe Parreno: ‘Synchronicity’
CURATED by the museum’s Director Larys Frogier, French artist Philippe Parreno’s solo exhibition “Synchronicity,” his first in China, opened yesterday at Rockbund Art Museum. As a major exhibition of the museum, it occupies four of the museum’s six floors, which also extends to the glass rooftop on the seventh floor.
Light, shadow and duration is manipulated by the artist to guide visitors through an evolving space. Blinds-covered windows will work like “eyelids,” allowing each gallery space shifting from darkness to twilight and then to full light. On the rooftop, Parreno installs a heliostat that directs sunlight directly into the fourth floor while the natural light is well choreographed by the artist with the movement of the blinds.
Parreno has held a number of solo exhibitions in various major museums around the world. In 2013, he became the first artist that took over the entire 22,000sqm gallery space at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris for his exhibition “Anywhere, Anywhere Out of the World.”
