Paper Cinema tells classic tale ‘The Odyssey’ with puppetry

THE Paper Cinema’s breathtaking “Odyssey” comes to Shanghai in November.

This interpretive live performance based on Homer’s Odyssey uses hand-drawn paper puppets that are brought to life through live cinema. The action is performed to original music, performed and written by The Paper Cinema musicians.

Nine years after the end of the Trojan War, the King, Odysseus, still has not returned home. In his absence, his house has been besieged by suitors who are after his crown, his wife and his lands. Away for 20 years, rumours of his death abound. Why isn’t he back? When will he be home? And will Penelope be able to keep the wolves at bay? The answers are in the hands of the Gods.

The Paper Cinema performs a unique form of live animation and music. Founded in 2004 by Nicholas Rawling, with Imogen Charleston and Christopher Reed, they tour bespoke pieces around Britain and internationally. The company uses the language of animation, music, film and theater to lead the viewer through a variety of stories.
