Festival to highlight French-Chinese’mix

AN exhibition titled “Listening to Transparency” at the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum by Grame, France’s national center for musical creation and multimedia, will launch this year’s edition of the Croisements Festival, France’s biggest overseas festival.
Curated by James Giroudon, this exhibition will gather more than 25 artists’ works, in which transparency goes hand in hand with light and sound effects.
The audience strolls through a space full of wonders in which reality is sometimes concealed, sometimes enhanced, as translucent materials blend with light and sound effects.
The exhibition is among over 60 programs that the 12th Croisements festival will bring to more than 30 Chinese cities from May 6 to July 9, including over 200 events of art, music, dance, film and architecture.
The festival invites both big names in French culture, such as Golden Globe best actress Isabelle Huppert, artist Philippe Parreno, and fresh new faces representing the dynamism of French creation, such as choreographers Maud Le Pladec and Pierre Rigal.
Cui Jian, considered the father of Chinese rock, Wang Yabin, dancer and choreographer, Sui Jianguo, renowned artist, and Lu Ming, cartoonist and illustrator as well as director Jia Zhangke all serve as the Chinese ambassadors to support the cultural exchange festival.
“Because of my journey and personal experiences, I feel a particular closeness to France and French culture. From my perspective there is a natural affinity between the two peoples, and between their cultures,” said Sui, adding:
“As an artist, I have had the chance to be tied to contemporary French and Parisian culture since the beginning of my career. I have many French friends and it is with pleasure that I contribute to cultural and artistic exchange between the two countries.”
Several French architects have had the chance to bring their talents to China and engage with the extraordinary urban development taking place here. Famous Architecture Studio will show how architecture can change life in a Shanghai show entitled “Mission Trans-missions.”
Over the past 12 years, Croisements demonstrates to Chinese audiences the strength of France’s creative sector and showcases Franco-Chinese crossovers.
The festival attracted over more than 4 million people across 29 cities last year.
