Cartier Time Art

CARTIER brings display of timeless masterpieces to Power Station of Art, third stop on world tour, to honor 50th anniversary of China-France ties.

The renowned French jeweler and watchmaker Cartier’s traveling exhibition, Cartier Time Art, arrived in Shanghai for its third stop after having been to Zurich, Switzerland and Singapore.

Contemporary art museum Power Station of Art is hosting over 180 prestigious historical and contemporary Cartier timepieces spanning more than a century until October 12.

Curated by the internationally renowned designer Tokujin Yoshioka, the exhibition space, with 3D films depicting the mechanisms of the watches, guides visitors through the company’s legacy of watchmaking, capturing how the endless pursuit of beauty among artists from East and West has expressed itself in the domain of timekeeping.

By presenting the public with multiple perspectives from history and heritage, evolution of style and aesthetics in design, the exhibition offers a rare and invaluable opportunity to explore the artistry and craftsmanship of watchmaking.

Pierre Rainero, heritage & style director of Cartier, said: “We are very honored to be invited by Power Station of Art for this collaboration and also very grateful to Tokujin Yoshioka for his special design for this exhibition. The exhibition about the art of time is like a trip through time and presents more than a century of Cartier’s rich heritage, design philosophy and aesthetic accomplishments in watchmaking. I hope that everybody who is interested can visit the exhibition in person to experience the unique glamour of the art of time.”

Gong Yan, director of Power Station of Art, remarked that “when we look into the universe, we are looking at its past. This is the world we perceive as allowed by time. What do we see then, when we are looking at a timepiece? The Cartier Time Art exhibition will help to reveal the mystery.”

PSA is the first state-run contemporary art museum in China’s mainland in this sense. In 2010 it was the Pavilion of Future of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai. A distinctive landmark situated on the left bank of the Huangpu River, PSA provides a platform of practice and operation for young curators and new prominent artists and offers a fashionable space and an amiable interface for the public to contact, appreciate and understand contemporary art.

Cartier Time Art first took place in 2011 at the birthplace of watchmaking, Switzerland, at Museum Bellerive in Zurich, after which it travelled to the Art Science Museum in Singapore.

Lots of quality on display

With its first time to China, the coming exhibition will showcase masterpieces from Cartier Collection, Metiers d’Art, Haute Horlogerie, watchmaking craftsmanship, innovation technology, together with 3D films and live demonstration by watchmakers and artisans.

Among the over 180 master timepieces to be on exhibit, there be 151 historical pieces from Cartier Collection. Since the first exhibition in 1989, the Cartier Collection has been shown at 27 of the world’s foremost institutions, including Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, British Museum in London and Grand Palais in Paris.

Cartier Collection also has deep ties to China and has been shown in Shanghai Museum, Palace Museum in Beijing and Liaoning Provincial Museum.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, Cartier Collection has returned to China.

The exhibition presents one of the highlights: Mystery Clock. These “miracles of clockmaking,” as described in La Gazette du Bon Ton, in 1925, were born of a collaboration between Louis Cartier and Maurice Couet.
