Ancient city retains best of old and new
WITH a history of 1,100 years, Wujiang is traditionally regarded as “the Land of Fish and Rice” and “the Capital of Silk,” and is known as “Venice of the East.”
But this once traditional agricultural town is today an industrialized city with a boomingeconomy.
It boasts both tangible and intangible resources, including poetry, silk, riverside and canals, folk song, and rural economic cultures.
This city of rich historical and cultural heritages is the birthplace of great men such as writer Lu Guimeng, astronomer Wang Xichan, poet Liu Yazi and sociologist Fei Xiaotong.
A county-level city in the southernmost part of Jiangsu Province, Wujiang was first established as a township in AD 909 in the Liang Dynasty but its jurisdiction and name has changed several times.
This picturesque city has jurisdiction over nine towns, and is crisscrossed by rivers, canals and lakes.
