Serena pulls out of Madrid Open

WORLD No. 1 Serena Williams has pulled out of the Madrid Open, which begins this weekend, with flu, organizers announced yesterday.

“Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from Madrid because I’ve been battling the flu and I’m not at 100 percent. I look forward to returning soon,” the American said in a statement.

The 21-time grand slam champion, 34, is a two-time winner in Madrid having triumphed in the Spanish capital in 2012 and 2013.

In the absence of Williams, Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska, who had been seeded two, will become the top seed.

In Prague, Czech Republic, world No. 25 Samantha Stosur will face last year’s French Open runner-up Lucie Safarova in the final of the Prague Open.

Australia’s Stosur advanced after top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova withdrew before their scheduled semifinal yesterday.

The Russian world No. 13 pulled out complaining of a thigh injury, leaving Stosur to advance to a final today against Safarova, the 16th-ranked Czech who beat compatriot Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 7-6 (4).
