Ma beats Fang for world title
WORLD No. 1 Ma Long beat Chinese compatriot Fang Bo 4-2 to win the men’s singles title at the world table tennis championships in Suzhou, east China’s Jiangsu Province, yesterday.
Earlier, still smarting from losing the women’s singles title to Ding Ning the day before, Liu Shiwen found some solace in the doubles final where she paired with Zhu Yuling to beat Ding and Li Xiaoxia in 8-11, 11-8, 3-11, 11-8, 11-13, 11-8, 11-8 in another all-Chinese clash. On Saturday, Ding claimed her second world title by battling through an ankle injury that left her in a heap. In Saturday’s other final, China’s Xu Xing and Zhang Jike beat compatriots Fan Zhendong and Zhou Yu 4-2 to claim the men’s doubles crown.
