Butterfly queen Liu fails to make Olympics

WITH a fifth-place finish in her signature 200-meter butterfly event, Beijing Olympic champion Liu Zige failed to qualify for the Rio Games at the Chinese National Swimming Championships in Foshan yesterday.

It is the end of an era. Liu and Jiao Liuyang had dominated the 200 fly since the 2008 Beijing Games, with Jiao winning at the London Games and Liu finishing second. Liu has been bothered by shoulder injuries in recent years but was determined to carry on, while Jiao has retired. But this year’s national championships in Guangdong Province could be the 27-year-old’s farewell competition. While Liu still holds the 200 fly world record of 2 minutes. 01.81 seconds, she finished behind Hebei swimmer Zhou Yilin, who won in 2:06.56, the world’s third-fastest time, yesterday. Jiangsu’s Zhang Yufei was second in 2:07.13, with Beijing’s Wang Siqi third in 2:07.47.
