Suarez on a roll as Reds edge closer to EPL title

LUIS Suarez scored his 30th Premier League goal of the season at Norwich City yesterday, becoming the first Liverpool player to achieve the feat since Ian Rush in 1987.

After giving Liverpool an early lead, Raheem Sterling teed up Suarez to steer home an 11th-minute shot that saw the Uruguayan register his 12th goal in his last five appearances against Norwich.

Another goal from Sterling gave Liverpool a 3-2 victory that took it five points clear at the top of the league table with three matches remaining. Gary Hooper and Robert Snodgrass’s goals for Norwich ensured a nervy finish for the visitors.

Suarez is now one goal short of the record tally for a 38-game Premier League season, which is jointly held by Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Liverpool can now eliminate second-place Chelsea from the title race by beating the Blues at Anfield next weekend.

Elsewhere, Lukas Podolski scored twice as Arsenal claimed an important 3-0 victory at Hull City. In a preview of next month’s FA Cup final at Wembley, Arsenal scored an important psychological edge over Steve Bruce’s team after Aaron Ramsey shot them in front.

German forward Podolski then added two goals in the space of eight minutes, either side of half-time.

On Saturday, Chelsea suffered a major setback to its title aspirations with a 1-2 loss against last-placed Sunderland, ending Jose Mourinho’s 77-match unbeaten home run during two spells in charge at Stamford Bridge. Sunderland’s Fabio Borini scored from the spot after Cesar Azpilicueta brought down Jozy Altidore in the box.
