Stadium fire report on Sunday

A DAMAGE evaluation report on Hongkou Football Stadium, which caught fire on Tuesday, will be delivered on Sunday.

The report will decide whether Shanghai Greenland Shenhua will be able to play its home match against Changchun Yatai on April 16 in the Chinese Super League.

A rock-climbing club, where the fire broke out at around 8:15am on Tuesday, is close to the stadium’s No. 21 stand. The fire partially ruined the stadium’s half-open roof and outer decoration.

Shenhua is scheduled to play two away matches before the Changchun fixture.

Authorities are checking if the steel structure of the roof, as well as the tunnel and steps towards the stand, are safe. Initial reports suggest the damage was not serious.

The Chinese Football Association has made alternative plans for the April 16 match if the stadium is not available. Shenhua may opt for a new venue, or may request Changchun to stage the match in Jilin as an away match.

If Hongkou Stadium is made available on April 16, the club will close the No. 21 stand and its surrounding areas to fans.
