Spurs’ Brazil midfielder Paulinho joins Evergrande

Brazil midfielder Paulinho has left Tottenham Hotspur to join Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande for 14 million euros (US$15.5 million), ending a frustrating two-year spell at the Premier League team.

Guangzhou said yesterday that Paulinho has signed a four-year deal. Tottenham hasn’t confirmed the transfer.

The 26-year-old joined Spurs from Corinthians in 2013, for 20 million euros — a club-record transfer fee at the time — but failed to make an impact and lost his first-team place under Mauricio Pochettino last season.

Defending Chinese Super League champion Guangzhou is managed by former Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Meanwhile, Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne is set to join Liverpool as Brendan Rodgers continues to revamp his squad ahead of the new season, media reported yesterday.

The 24-year-old England right-back has returned from holiday and underwent a medical before the 12.5 million pounds (US$19.6 million) move is completed.

Assuming he passed his medical, Clyne will become Liverpool’s sixth preseason signing.

Arrangements are also reportedly being made to bring Brazil international Roberto Firmino to Anfield as his participation in the Copa America has come to an end with the defeat by Paraguay on Saturday.

Tomorrow, when the transfer window opens, Liverpool is set to confirm the arrivals of Manchester City midfielder James Milner, Burnley striker Danny Ings, Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan as well as that of Clyne. Yet despite the influx of players, including Charlton defender Joe Gomez, Rodgers is expected to spend less than a year ago when he shelled out on 110 million pounds on eight players.
